UNN Introduces Postgraduate Programme in Climate Change
Climate change is becoming one of the greatest public policy issues of the present day. For humanity to adequately respond to climate change challenges, there is need for a scientifically literate society that can effectively weigh the evidence regarding global climate change as it confronts the challenges ahead, while developing the innovative policy and technology workforce to advance knowledge of human-climate interactions and develop solutions for a sustainable and prosperous future.
The University of Nigeria with support from the Open Society Foundation (OSF) of the
United States of America is rising to this challenge by offering postgraduate programme
in Climate change Economics, Policy and Innovation, starting in October, 2013. The
programme has the approval of the University of Nigeria Senate, and the National
Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja. The programme will adopt a trans-disciplinary
approach that allows students to pursue a programme of advanced learning suited to their
individual interests and skills in the area of Climate Change.
Staff and all those who inted to work in all federal and state ministries, agencies and
parastatals, NGOs and private operators in the Climate Change Innovation Systems are
encourage to apply
Graduates of the programme will have a higher level of thinking and understanding of
climate science, climate impacts, climate politics, climate economics, climate policy and
law and climate ethics and equity to allow them to effectively discharge their duties with
issues encountered by climate- sensitive sectors.
Available Postgradaute Programme
The available postgraduate programme are:
Postgraduate Diploma in Climate Change Economics Policy and Innovation;
M.Sc. in Climate Change Economics Policy and Innovation; and
Ph.D in Climate Change Economics Policy and Innovation.
The Degrees will be awarded in the department of geography, faculty of the social
Sciences
Entry Qualifications for Postgraduate Programme in Climate Change Economics,
Policy and Innovation (CCEPI)
Postgraduate Diploma
i) Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other recognized Universities.
ii) Holders of Credit (Upper credit) level passes at HND;

iii) Candidates with the Bachelors Degree with a minimum of third class
honours;
iv) Please note that in all cases, candidates must have obtained 5 credits in
WASC or GCE O/L or NECO including English and Mathematics
Masters Degree Programme
The following shall qualify for Masters Degree admission:
(i) Graduates of the University of Nigeria or of other recognized universities
who have obtained the degree of Bachelor with at least a good second
class honours.
i) Candidates with the Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change
Economics, Policy and Innovation of the University of Nigeria or awarded
by a recognized institution with not less than an upper credit.
(ii) Candidates whose first degrees are unclassified but have scores of 50% or
above.
(iii) Please note that in all cases, candidates must have obtained 5 credits in
WASC or GCE O/L or NECO including English and Mathematics
(iv) Candidates who hold qualifications other than those listed above, which
are acceptable to the Senate of the University of Nigeria.
Doctorate (Ph.D) Degree Programme
(i) Candidates of the University of Nigeria or of other recognized Universities
who have obtained the Masters Degree in Climate Change Economics,
Policy and Innovation with at least a CGPA of 3.50 grade point average
on a 5-point scale or ‘B’ 60% average provided that satisfactory research
work formed part of the Masters Degree programme.
(ii) Demonstrated evidence of completed academic research will be an
advantage.
Masters/Ph.D Programme
(i) A candidate with first class honours from a recognized University may be
admitted into a Masters/Ph.D programme.
(ii) A candidate with Masters degree from the University of Nigeria or a recognized
University with a grade point average of 3.50 on 5-point or 3.00 on 4-point scale
shall qualify for the Masters/Ph.D. Research work did not form part of the
Masters Degree programme
DURATION OF COURSES
(a) Postgraduate Diploma (Full-time) – Two semesters
(b) Postgraduate Diploma (Part-time) – Four semesters
(c) Masters Degree (Full-time) – Four Semesters.
(d) Masters Degree (Part-time) – Six Semesters

(e) Ph.D (Full-time)- Six Semesters.
(f) Ph.D (Part-time)- Eight Semesters
