Subsidy Removal: Strike collapses in Anambra as protesters drum support for Jonathan

No comments :
THE on-going nationwide strike to protest against removal of fuel subsidy appears to have collapsed in Anambra State, as pro-subsidy demonstrators, yesterday, took over major streets of Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi in support of the removal.
The demonstrators, who waved placards, said Nigerians should think of the long term benefits of the fuel subsidy removal and described President Goodluck Jonathan as a courageous leader, who should be supported by all.

Leader of the demonstrators, Mr Raluchukwu Umeh, reminded Nigerians that the measure was a temporary sacrifice for a better future and urged every discerning Nigerian to support removal of fuel subsidy which, to him, was a move made by the government to bail Nigeria out of her economic problem.
Many filling stations and other business outfits opened for normal activities, yesterday, and public power supply was also on in the state, unlike the situation on Monday, when the strike began, except that offices of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, were not attending to customers. All markets in the state were open and motor parks were as busy as ever.
The banks were, however, not open and long queues were seen at various banks by people withdrawing money from the Automated Teller Machines, ATM.
Meanwhile, Governor Peter Obi has commended the people of the state for what he described as their understanding over the fuel subsidy removal and appealed to them to continue to go about their normal businesses.
He assured them that the initial hardship occasioned by the subsidy removal would be manageable as against the havoc it would have caused the nation in future.
He called on the people to be vigilant and be alive to their responsibilities to ensure that proceeds from subsidy removal were judiciously utilized.
